The Bigger Picture: Deal or no-deal?
Mike Indian, political commentator and author of The Groucho Tendency blog, discusses with Simon Rose the outcome of the EU summit in Salzburg where leaders of the 27 other member states discussed Brexit. With the head of the European Council Donald Tusk saying that May’s Chequers plan would not work, what does that mean for the Prime Minister and her plan. Is a no-deal Brexit now more likely. Mike also highlights the leaked Tory dossier about who might replace May, which gives pitchy comments on the chances of the possible candidates. Ahead of the Labour Party conference, he looks at Labour’s democracy review and the possibility of the party endorsing a call for a second Brexit referendum.

Share Politics: When will Article 50 be triggered?
Despite Theresa May's threats of retribution should peers attempt to amend the Brexit bill, this week the House of Lords voted for an amendment that means the Prime Minister must guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in the UK after Brexit. And today, Mrs May has called on Conservatives to support the Union of the UK during a speech to the Scottish Tory conference in Glasgow. The Weeks Update: Are we on the verge of a European existential crisis?

The Weeks Update: Are we on the verge of a European existential crisis?
If all goes according to plan in Westminster, Theresa May will soon have her finger on the Brexit trigger. Once the Prime Minister fires the starting shot, a clock of two years begins ticking for Britain to negotiate its exit from the European Union. With May seeking controls on immigration alongside special access to the single market and customs union, the core pillars of the European project will be put to the test. Brexit negotiations alone will be a sizeable workout for EU leaders, but Europe must proceed against an uncertain backdrop. Donald Trump’s ascendancy in the United States has not only cast the post-war bedrocks like NATO in doubt, but has emboldened Eurosceptic populists on the continent. A series of electoral trials awaits in 2017: the French presidential election in the Spring; a German parliamentary election in the Autumn. Regardless of what the final British-EU relationship will look like, it remains an open question as to whether the EU itself will be recognisable in a year. Alex Deane Managing Director at FTI Consulting on Trump, Brexit and Farage
Why he got it right on Trump when almost everyone else didn’t. What sort of president will Trump be? Does the UK Government have a plan for Brexit and what sort of Brexit will it be? How should the government treat Nigel Farage, given that he clearly gets on better with Trump than anyone else in the UK?

John Phelan chief economist at Agrimoney discusses Trump and Hilary’s economic policies.
Simon Rose was joined by John Phelan chief economist at Agrimoney to discuss Trump and Hilary’s economic policies. Trump seems to view trade as a zero sum game, a fight with winners and losers. He talks of the all the money the US supposedly 'loses' to China or wherever. What he fails to mention is the goods and services China 'loses' to the US in return for these bits of paper. Hilary thinks all government spending is investment and believes in myths like the minimum wage and the gender pay gap.
