This Is Money: More of us are falling into the savings tax trap - is it fair?
You find a decent paying savings account, diligently squirrel away your money, watch it grow… only for the taxman to come along and swipe a chunk. And since savings rates have been much better in recent years, the amount HMRC is taking in in savings tax revenue has gone up significantly. It's only going to increase according to estimates, to the tune of £10.37 billion in 2024/25, up from £6.6 billiion in 2023/24 - and £1.2 billion in 2021/22. So, how can you dodge the trap? Georgie Frost, Helen Crane and Lee Boyce look at this growing revenue spinner. It also means taking advantage of ISAs is key - and we're very keen on one tax-free account in particular. And sticking with savings, Helen explains the case of a Barclays customer who had a stroke - recovered better than expected - but was then locked out of his account with £100,000 in it for nearly a year. There is a mobile phone swiping epidemic in the country - but what is it the criminals are really after? Is it the handset, or something else? We explain all, alongside businessman and This is Money columnist Dave Fishwick, who interviewed one of the gang leaders. And sticking with Dave... he gives his views on what needs to happen after the general election on 4 July for the North. It's not just our phones being stolen… motor theft too is on the rise. A former police interceptor gives his tips on how to keep your vehicle safe. Lastly, what is the magic number of salary to make you feel rich? Recruiter Indeed believes it has found the answer...

Gadgets & Gizmos: Hypnosis for Technology Addiction
Time is the scarce resource in human lives, and technology in its various forms swallows a lot of it for many of us. When its absorption into our lives becomes almost a habit or an addiction, it can cause us to miss opportunities and it can impact our character and even our identity. Whether it's gaming, social media or other online activity that turns you on, the emotional appeal is generally that instant gratification which pulls us away from experiencing real life and relationships. If you're concerned about being drawn into this trap of gaming and virtual experience, this episode could help you restore balance into your life. Originally broadcast on 4th February 2023

Thought for the Week: 21st Century Elephant Traps
In the old days we either telephoned someone for a quick answer to a question, or sent a letter which focused the attention of the recipient. Now huge volumes of emails fly across the net, and we're left waiting days for an answer. It may be cheap, but is it productive? Also — People think that debit cards are as safe as credit cards or direct debit authorities — until something goes wrong. And, if it's a continuous payment authority given to an overseas supplier, there's very limited protection available, beyond FCA guidance. Background music: 'Communicator' by Reed Mathis

Thought for the Week: Democratising AI Ownership
In a world absorbed with tension and conflict, it says something about the significance of AI that Rishi Sunak was able to host the conference at Bletchley Park, with government representatives from twenty-eight nations and eight leading Artificial Intelligence businesses. Warnings abound both within and outside the AI industry, including for its impact on employment, to which we referred nearly six years ago. However, is the Bletchley Park gathering just evidence of the rich and powerful flexing their muscles yet again to take control? Surely we should be looking for an alternative, offering mass participation in wealth creation and democratisation through distributed governance?
