The Business of Film: Rose Plays Julie, Kate & Johnny Guitar
James Cameron-Wilson examines the UK box office, depressed by a lack of any new big films ahead of the new James Bond film, No Time To Die. Stylish Irish film Rose Plays Julie arrived at #30 in the chart, though James still recommends last week's Irish entry Herself, now at #15. With nothing else new to get his teeth into, James recommends the Netflix film Kate, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson, despite a somewhat derivative thriller plot. He also feels the 1954 Joan Crawford film Johnny Guitar, long held to be a camp classic, deserves a higher reputation; it is now out in a restored edition on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Business of Film: Respect, Cop Shop, Herself & top stars' salaries going through the roof
James Cameron-Wilson looks at Aretha Franklin biopic Respect with Jennifer Hudson (#3 in the chart), Cop Shop with Gerard Butler (#7) and, at #12, Herself, a British drama with Clare Dunne (also co-writer) and directed by Mamma Mia director Phyllida Lloyd, which James recommends highly. He also looks at the recent revelations of the paydays for the top Hollywood stars, with news that Bond star Daniel Craig is to get $100m from Netflix for making 2 sequels to Knives Out.

Business of Film: Shang-Chi & Legend of 10 Rings, Candyman, Ruby Sparks & Sweet Girl
James Cameron-Wilson is bemused at the extraordinary box office success of Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with Simu Liu taking almost £6m at the weekend alone. Will it get its chance in China though? Other new films are the reimagining of Candyman, directed by Nia DaCosta and Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins. James also reviews Sweet Girl, out on Netflix and catches up, thanks to a charity shop purchase, with charming 2012 comedy Ruby Sparks.

The Business of Film: The top ten Westerns
With Simon Rose taking a well-earned break, we re-visit 'The Westerns' from our top ten reviews. Vicky Sayers is joined by film critic and broadcaster, James Cameron-Wilson, to discuss some of the most influential films from the Western genre. Incredibly popular during the silent film era, the Western was revived in 1939 with John Ford’s 'Stagecoach', and reached its peak in the 1950s. But are its best days really behind it?

The Business of Film: Snake Eyes, Reminiscence, The Father and Beckett
James Cameron-Wilson analyses the latest UK box office, with Free Guy still #1. At #6 is GI Joe spin-off Snake Eyes with Henry Golding. Sci-fi action film noir Reminiscence with Hugh Jackman only limps in at #11 a film so dire that, for the first time ever, James overheard somebody asking for their money back! As DVD of the week, he recommends the Oscar-winning The Father with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman with excellent bonus material. And he also likes Netflix's Beckett, a thriller with John David Washington.

The Business of Film: Free Guy, The Courier and Tiger Bay
James Cameron-Wilson tries to make sense of a box office that has risen even though all the existing big movies have seen their takes collapse. Riding high at #1 is Disney's Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds, a film packing cinemagoers in despite little advance buzz. James found it smart and original but was less impressed by the spy thriller The Courier with Benedict Cumberbatch which debuted at #8. On DVD, as well as seeing his earlier recommendation Antebellum again, he also proposes watching 1959's Tiger Bay, the first film to star Hayley Mills.

The Business of Film: Spirit Untamed, Stillwater, The Last Letter from your Lover & Running Against the Wind
James Cameron-Wilson is positive about the UK box office, down 16% against a strong week but still up over 2,000% on last year! He reviews computer-animated Spirit Untamed w. Julianne Moore, gripping thriller Stillwater w. Matt Damon from Spotlight director Tom McCarthy and Mills & Boon-y The Last Letter From Your Lover w. Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley. His DVD of the week is an utterly absorbing Ethiopian film Running Against The Wind.

The Business of Film: The Suicide Squad, Jungle Cruise & Antebellum
As cinemas are once more permitted to operate at full capacity, James Cameron-Wilson celebrates another uptick in box office take. He reviews The Suicide Squad, James Gunn's latest hit with Idris Elba and Margot Robbie, finding it even better than The Guardians of the Galaxy. He is less impressed by Jungle Cruise with Emily Blunt, another film based on a theme park ride. But he recommends Antebellum, a dark film about racism now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Business of Film: Old, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions & Blood Red Sky
James Cameron-Wilson reports that UK box office is not only up 8.9% week on week but 1,832% year on year! Despite its potential for a great story, he was underwhelmed by M. Night Shayamalan's Old with Gael Garcia Bernal and Rufus Sewell, in at #4. Nor was he convinced by Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, #7 in the chart. He did, however, find himself on the edge of his seat in Blood Red Sky on Netflix , finding it nerve-shredding. He also reflects on the joy of finding laughter in a film that is 100 year old.

The Business of Film: Space Jam - A New Legacy, The Forever Purge & The Croods - A New Age
James Cameron-Wilson laments the 41% drop in UK box office weekend takings - and that against cinemas hit by a weekend of sport. But he has trouble recommending the new chart entries, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Forever Purge & The Croods: A New Age. Wondering why Brits don't seek shelter from the heat in air-conditioned cinema comfort, as Americans do, he still highly recommends A Quiet Place 2 and In The Heights.
