The Share Radio Evening Show

Why are consumer confidence expectations for 2017 at their weakest since June's Brexit vote?
Confidence in the UK's economic situation continued to dwindle in the face of uncertainty, but overall it remained resilient at the end of the year. This is according to the latest GfK barometer, which found that consumer confidence did not deteriorate further following November's sharp drop, instead managing to move up one point to -7. However, it seems we are more concerned about the economic outlook next year, with expectations for 2017 at their weakest since June's Brexit vote. As always when we discuss consumer confidence, Simon was joined live in the studio by Joe Staton, head of market dynamics, at GfK.

What are the biggest economic lessons we can learn from 2016?
To finish off in what turned out to be a remarkable year, no year in review in the conventional sense, and no bog-standard, bank-type economic outlook 2017. Rather, and in keeping with the time of year, here is a list of nine economic lessons (but no carols) that we learned. ‘Learn’ may be a bit strong in many cases, so perhaps ‘became more aware’, instead.

Is the housing supply issue which dominated the headlines in 2016 going to continue into 2017?
UK house prices are set to rise by three per cent next year and central London prices will stop falling, as they have done throughout this year. That's according to the RICS housing forecast for next year which predicts that house prices will continue to rise on the back of a shortage of housing supply. To find out more about this, Simon was joined down the line by Simon Rubinsohn, RICS chief economist.

Are you more likely to fall victim to a physical home break-in or a digital crime?
Most of us believe that we are twice as likely to fall victim to a physical home break-in than a digital crime. However, according to the Crime Survey of England and Wales, people are in fact much more likely to be the target of digital crime, with almost half of all crime now either fraud or cyber crime. To find out how we can stay safe online, Jinan Rahma was joined by Mark Hughes, President of BT Security.

How many of you are fearful about your online security?
How many of you are fearful about your online security? According to the findings of Britain's Digital DNA - a new report by global management consultancy, Oliver Wyman - more than a third of us are willing to take ourselves off the grid to protect our privacy. The report comes just days after the Investigatory Powers Act was passed into law, widening the Government's digital surveillance powers - the passing of the new law, dubbed by its' critics as the 'Snoopers' Charter', is likely to further increase consumer fears about privacy online. To discuss the findings in more detail, Olivia Demetriades spoke to Chris McMillan, a Partner at Oliver Wyman and lead on Britain's Digital DNA report.
