The Bigger Picture: The cost-of-living crisis, can Boris survive and is Russia sabre-rattling over Ukraine?
Political commentator Mike Indian looks at the energy price cap increase and the general rise in the cost of living, as well as the Government's attempts to ameliorate the effects of inflation in an era of rampant political short-termism. He examines the waning popularity of Boris Johnson and asks if the PM can survive, feeling the May local elections could prove crucial. And he turns his attention to the Ukraine, wondering if Russia is merely sabre-rattling or if Putin is seriously considering an invasion.

Gadgets & Gizmos: Wordle sold, stamps go tech, making scooters safer with cymbals & tubas
Share Radio's technology editor Steve Caplin discusses the success of the online game Wordle, just bought by the New York Times. The Royal Mail will be adding QR codes to stamps to show videos, rendering all existing stamps obsolete. Horse riders will soon be able to learn to ride using a smart saddle while there are proposals to make electric scooters safer by getting them to emit the noise of a cymbal followed by that of a tuba. There's a wetsuit to protect swimmers from sharks and Tesla has yet more problems with recalls and hacking.

The Financial Outlook for Personal Investors: How should investors cope with highly volatile markets?
Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, explains why markets are so highly volatile at present, producing the worst start to the year since the financial crisis as QE is about to give way to QT (Quantitative Tightening). She points out that investors should try not to get emotional but to review their portfolio. Indeed, if companies you considered attractive only recently are now much cheaper, perhaps it could prove a bargain-hunting opportunity.

The Bigger Picture: The end of globalisation, is Labour still divided & is inflation massively under-counted?
Professor Tim Evans of Middlesex University asks whether we are seeing the end of the second great age of globalisation and wonders how the future will be different. With the Tories in free fall, he ponders whether there are still divisions within Labour. And he reflects on the way inflation is calculated and how it may not reflect the experience of the less well-off.

The Business of Film: Belfast, Nightmare Alley, My Son, The Sun Shines Bright
James Cameron-Wilson examines the UK box office, with Spiderman still reigning supreme; its £87.4m take makes it the 7th highest-grossing UK film ever. Kenneth Branagh's memoir Belfast opens at #2, though James was less than impressed. Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley (a remake) w. Bradley Cooper is at #4 but also disappointed James. He was more impressed with My Son on Amazon Prime with James McAvoy and Claire Foy and with a new version of the 1953 John Ford film The Sun Shines Bright on Blu-Ray.

Gadgets & Gizmos: 5G stalled by lampposts (R)
You may have read of the stalling of 5G installation around airports: such precautions are not new! In May 2019 Steve Caplin explained why 5G has been stalled by lamppost problems - this is the episode raising the issue. He also went automotive, looking at Dyson's plans for an electric off-road car, the Honda e with swift recharge, the electric Jaguar E-type with optional original engine and Hydrogen-powered double-decker buses and he explained why Jeff Bezos thinks he can have a moonbase by 2024 while Elon Musk thinks he can get to Mars by then. Australia's $50 note issue was marred by a spelling mistake, Barcelona had a self-charging e bike and there's a very cheap credit-card sized charger to take around with you.

The Financial Outlook for Personal Investors: What will 40-year-high inflation in the US mean for markets?
Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, talks to Simon Rose about the likely effects of US inflation hitting 7%, a forty-year high. With the labour market there tight, as in the UK, she considers what the Federal Reserve's response is likely to be, given that the problems are caused more by the supply side of the economy, rather than the demand side. And what will this mean for markets and the sort of tech stocks that have been riding so high?
